Approximately 20,000 years ago, two lobes of glacial sheets collided resulting in large blocks of ice breaking off and becoming buried. As the buried ice melted, kettles were formed producing depressions as small as yards in diameter to as large as 300 feet in depth. This phenomenon produced an area of varied topography of steep sided ridges, conical hills or kames, and flat glacial outwash plains mostly comprised of sand and gravel.
This northern area of the Kettle Moraine State Forest encompasses 29,268 acres of rolling wooded landscape dotted with serene lakes and offering an unlimited opportunity of unique outdoor recreational experiences. Spend a summer day hiking, biking or horseback riding or explore the 160 miles of Ice Age Trail in the winter on your snowmobile, snow shoes or cross-country skis.
Please take pride in our geological history and promote proper stewardship of this land at Farmington Heights and all of the land across our great county.
